This week’s 13th edition of 3 Teacher Tips Thursday comes from monthly contributor Michael Consul.
Below are 3 simple yet effective resources broken up into 3 categories:
– Great Ideas
– Online Tools
– Teacher PD
Enjoy 3 Teacher Tips Thursday. Hope you find it resourceful.

HANDS UP
In the online world, we’re always looking for ways to engage our students and promote participation (especially when students are reluctant to turn on their cameras). Here’s a easy activity you can do with cameras off. It’s a simple poll. Basically create a series of questions starting with the phrase, “Raise your hand if…”

If you pick the right questions, the amount of participation can be super high because it is so easy to participate. It’s also a good way to quickly “test the waters” and get a read of the audience/class.
Another version of this activity is to START with EVERYONE’S hand up. Then create a series of questions starting with the phrase, “Put your hand down if….“
2 quick and easy activities you can pull out any time to increase participation and engagement. Kudos to Fraser Gartside (chaplain at Francis Libermann) for giving me this idea.

WHEEL OF NAMES
If you’ve ever attended any of our online leadership meetings, you’ll notice we use this all the time. There’s so many different ways you implement the wheel of names. Here’s some ideas.
- Use as a random number generator
- Add student names and the name picked needs to answer a question or share a response
- Add discussion topics and the one that is picked is what you teach
- You can even add images, below is a DPA example

Be creative. Any image can also be added in the middle circle. And the number of individual items you can put on the wheel is endless. Be creative. Have fun!

PODCAST: WHOLE HEARTED TEACHER
TCDSB secondary teacher Adrian Del Monte has a great podcast. I’ve always said that the best source of teaching tips is each other. The Whole Hearted Teacher podcast is a great source of PD. Previous guests include many TCDSB educators as well as professionals across Canada. Highly recommended!
